GAME STATE UPDATE: The Edge of the Universe
Hi friends!
We've said those words a lot over the last (almost!) two years - for ac checks, for calendar updates, in PMs and plurks and god knows what else. Well here we are again! Hi friends. We have a very special and painfully bittersweet announcement to make.
Over the last few weeks, we've been having some thoughtful conversations in our living room about the future of the game, the demands of our schedules, what is responsible for us as a mod team to handle versus what we have the time and ability to do and whether the fact that that two don't always overlap is manageable or honestly unsustainable. The culmination of these long conversations is that we (Abby and Donna and Beka and Avali) have come to the conclusion that we don't have the ability to continue modding the game in the long term. As a result, Station 72 will be closing in the not too distant future.
Right now our plans are to continue through the end of Mission: Hyrypia and into a Station interlude that can serve as a narrative end cap. As we anticipate this to take roughly four months, we'll still be implementing the changes we discussed in the recent AC Check's OOC updates including processing a final round of applications. Beyond that we'll keep you up to date as plans solidify and the structure of Hyrypia's end reveals itself (as we still want the mission to heavily weigh player character decision making, at present we ourselves only have a narrow concept of how the mission will wrap). Originally, we intended to truck on through Hyrypia and announce that we'd be winding up the game afterwards in the interest of maintaining player engagement, but after some deliberation we've decided it's best to give everyone some time to prepare and make decisions about how they may want to approach the conclusion of our time together on S72.
We also wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all the time and creative energy you've put into this thing both prior to now and (hopefully! though we know how this often shakes out in DWRPlandia) in the months to come. Running S72 has been exciting and frustrating and challenging and inspiring and exhausting and rewarding; we've written so much - some might say TOO much, but if you're not here for big blocks of text then buddy how have you survived this long under our reign of tl;dr? - and we've tried so many different things and have found real joy in building stories and worlds and plots and relationships for and with you. Donna and I have learned a lot about each other, have had some gnarly arguments (shoutout to our roommates for not murdering us in our sleep instead of gracefully putting up with our nonsense) and great triumphs, and we are so proud of the thing we made together. We've had so much fun creating spaces to tell stories in and hope that you've found and will find your time here equally memorable. At the end of the day, we might be kind of tired and sad that we can't keep this up forever but honestly? It's been pretty good. And that's not nothing.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns either now or going forward; we have every intention of operating business as usual until the doors close. That said, S72 has been a constant learning experience and, wouldn't you know it, this is our first time winding a game down to its end. If our skill at doing so is anything like our ability to code html or link the right posts on mod plurks, there may be some kinks to work out as we go. :') We'll be as communicative as we know how to be and eagerly look forward to making the last few months of the game as special as the first twenty-two.
